artistnameleon releases “Longshot”, a laid-back anthem with an arcade theme, to praise the hopeful serenity of 2021. The ATL-based singer-songwriter spent the majority of the last year challenging our perception of genre. “Longshot” is his latest single to sit outside these scopes, generating fresh lyricism that decentralizes the definitions of genre.

“I don’t carry fetty / Put that on my debit / I’ve been minding bidness / I just built my credit.” From a rap perspective – a clout dealer’s genre of choice – artistnameleon pushes increasingly mature narratives: no fetty, minding his own business and staying steady. From a pop perspective – full of flash, money and radio hits – this up-and-coming songwriter instead opts to promote personal growth.

Music needs more of this, and artistnameleon is a shining example of where lyricism and genre will move into the future.

artistnameleon dropped his latest single “Let Me Know” to encourage everyone to open up. But that’s not all: the ATL-based up-and-comer wants to challenge our perceptions of genre. “Let Me Know,” produced by Atlanta native Zillasuper and Poland-based Guavo, could reasonably fit into four or five genres. However, artistnameleon wants nothing to do with labels, making music strictly through emotion rather than our preconceived notions of genre.

“Let Me Know” is not quite rap, not quite R&B, and not quite pop. artistnameleon has previously been referred to as a chillwave rapper, but his latest works – like 2019’s full-length Matter of Time – showcase a talent for centralizing melody with rap, all at once. “Let Me Know” further accentuates this point, letting us know where artistnameleon plans to go from here. According to this latest single, artistnameleon is ready to “Show you a few things / You ain’t never seen before”.

Artistnameleon returns fire with December 2019’s “Locked In,” flexing next-level preparedness for the coming decade that his detractors simply aren’t ready for. If we’re judging this piece by its cover alone, Leon’s listeners can forecast another smooth banger—nothing surprising there—his affinity for quality content is attested by three solid, full-length projects with eye-catching concept art and fresh stylistic blends. This time, however, be very afraid; Artistnameleon is back on his wave. On the surface, this single provides everything we’ve come to expect from legendary artists: production quality, heavy percussion, timeless melodies. Perhaps even more impressive, though, is his knack for combining listenability with lyricism; slant rhyming such phrases as “we all about ownership” and “they wanna beef, well, I send my condolences.” Leon’s multi-faceted vocals, combined with J Patterns’ production work, truly lock the listener into a hypnotic vibe that has all the makings of a 2020 hit.
